Behind the scenes

What “handmade in small batches” actually means

“Handmade” appears on a lot of labels. It is worth knowing what it means in practice, because it explains both the charm and the limits of a piece like this.

Small batches, not production runs

A batch is a handful of pieces made in one go from the same materials. That is why a design can be available today and sold out next week, and why a restock takes longer than clicking reorder. Every piece passes through someone's hands several times before it is checked and packed.

Small differences are the point

Colour placement, the exact angle of a petal, the swirl in a marbled surface — these vary slightly from piece to piece. Your piece will look like the photo without being identical to it. That is not a defect; it is the difference between a handmade piece and an injection-moulded one.

Where the price comes from

The material is rarely the expensive part. Time is: shaping, curing, sanding, assembling, checking and packing. A small independent studio has no economies of scale to hide that behind, so the price reflects the hours rather than a marketing budget.

What that means for you

  • If you love a design, do not wait too long — batches are limited and not every one comes back.
  • Ask before you buy. A small studio can answer questions about materials, weight and length personally.
  • Treat the pieces gently. Handmade materials reward a little care with years of wear — our care guide covers the details.

Every order goes to a workshop rather than a warehouse, and that is the part we like most about working this way.
